The castle d’ Aspremont-Lynden

kasteel, oud-rekem, aspremont-lyndenThe castle d’ Aspremont-Lynden, built in Maasland Renaissance style in 1595 is located on the spot where former old castles and citadels were raised.  The counts of the county of Rekem used to live in the castle.  During the French era (1795 tot 1805), a military hospital was established there, between 1809 and 1891 an alms house and finally, from 1921 till 1980, a psychiatric institution. Nowadays, the building is a protected monument and the castle is not open to individuals.
